Thread count explained — what really makes a bedsheet soft

Higher isn't always better. What thread count means, which numbers make sense, and what matters more than the number on the label.

· 1 min read

Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — the lengthwise threads (warp) plus the crosswise threads (weft). A sheet with 100 warp and 100 weft threads per square inch is 200 TC.

Is a higher thread count always better?

No. Up to a point, more threads give a smoother, denser fabric. Beyond that, very high numbers are often reached by twisting several thin strands into one thread (“multi-ply”) and counting each strand — the number goes up, but the sheet can feel heavier and breathe less.

As a simple guide:

  • 140–180 TC — light, breathable everyday cotton; great for warm Indian summers.
  • 200–300 TC — smoother and more substantial; a good choice for premium home and hotel use.
  • Above 300 TC — mostly about a silkier hand-feel, usually in a sateen weave.

What matters more than the number

  1. The cotton itself. Longer, finer fibres (combed cotton) feel softer and pill less.
  2. The weave. Percale feels crisp and cool; sateen feels silky and slightly warmer.
  3. The finish. Good washing and finishing make a sheet soft from the first night.

When you compare bedsheets, ask about the yarn and weave as well as the TC — that is what you feel when you sleep.
