How to care for cotton bedsheets so they last for years

Good cotton bedsheets last for years with a little care.

1. Wash before first use. It removes finishing residue and starts the softening process.
2. Use cold or warm water and a mild detergent. Very hot water and strong detergents fade colours and weaken fibres.
3. Skip bleach on prints and colours. Use it only on white hotel linen made for it.
4. Dry in the shade. Strong sun fades prints; shade-dry and bring sheets in once dry.
5. Don’t over-dry. If you use a dryer, choose low heat and remove sheets while slightly damp.
6. Rotate two or three sets. Giving each set a rest between uses makes them all last longer.
7. Store clean and fully dry, in a cool, airy cupboard — never in plastic for long periods.
