The story behind the print
Gold print (khari)
- Origin:
- Jaipur and Bagru, Rajasthan (inspiration)
- Since:
- A hereditary craft, still practised today
A fine gold print that catches the light, from Rajasthan's festive tradition of khari printing.
Khari (also called chamki work) is the Rajasthani art of printing with gold, silver or mica. A sticky paste is stamped onto the cloth with a block, and metallic powder is dusted over it while it is still wet. Once dry, the loose powder is brushed off and the pattern shines. The shimmer sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking into it.
Khari was made for celebrations: wedding odhnis, festive skirts and gifts. Only a few families in Jaipur and nearby Bagru still do it by hand, and one family carried the craft to Ahmedabad.
Our Gold Print range brings that festive shine to bedsheets: soft colours with a fine gold print on 100% cotton, screen printed in Jaipur. To keep the gold bright, wash it gently in cold water, inside out, and avoid wringing.
